Starting from Chefchaouni Avenue, Tunisia Mosque. « Fes New City »

Fes is the oldest of imperial cities in Morocco. It’s the embodiment of the country, and its spiritual and religious capital. It has been a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The city consists of:

  • Fes Bali
  • Fes El Jadid
  • New City

The history of Fes Bali is linked to its founder, Moulay Idrissi and Moulay Idriss II. In 789, the first Moulay Idriss fled from Baghdad to North West Africa and was able to build an Arabic Muslim city on the right bank of the Fes River.

His son, Moulay Idriss 2, built another city on the left bank of the river in 818.

Fes El Jadid, or Imperial City, is situated to the west of the old town.

In 1250, the Merinids dynasty raised Fes to the status of an imperial capital and endowed it with prestigious buildings.

To the west of the old town, they established a new royal city (New Fes), conquered by the Alaouites in 1666.

Fes was spurned by Moulay Ismail, who chose Meknes as his capital.

Fes New City, located farther south, is the modern district created during the protectorate period between 1912 and 1956 by Prosperiolis.

After independence, this area was filled with citizens from the old Medina, while the rural population, rootless and poor, crowded into the old town.

However, UNESCO’s ongoing restoration program has saved the historic city of Fes Bali.
